CHICAGO - Appearing together for the first time, 4 days after a deadly 4th of July Weekend that claimed 19 lives and 109 were shot, Chicago Mayor Brandon and Police Superintendent Larry Snelling and other members of his team held a press conference at the CPD Headquarters at 35th and Michigan Ave. Monday July,8, 2024.
Addressing the violence, Supt. Snelling asked the question, “What kind of mindset enters a home and opens fire on 2 women and leaving 3 small children under the age of 8, in critical condition and one has died and thinks it’s ok? What kind of mindset does that? Somebody knows something so they can keep them off the street.”
In this reporter’s opinion, if the police investigation has linked it to a social media conflict…then they know something and should connect the dots and make an arrest. Mayor Brandon Johnson said, “Everything had been tried and it has failed.” He said it didn’t happen in a vacuum and was generational. “We are losing a piece of the Soul of Chicago because these are not just headlines, they are our neighbors.”
We need our state and federal partners, business, faith community and the entire city to step up and say we have had enough.
On July 9, 2024, a Trauma Assistance Center will open up at 1312 S. Racine to address trauma, provide information, support and resources for anyone, whether last week or years ago, impacted by violence.
My Question: Considering May 17, 2024 was the 70th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court Decision that ended 88 years of Segregation Laws, ruling it was unconstitutional because it only existed to keep the status of the Negro down and caused serious heart and mind damage to young Negro Children; was Chicago’s segregation against Negro Blacks, especially women and children a factor of why you didn’t hold a press conference? If not, what was the reason?
Mayor Johnson answered and said he was out of town. Supt. Snelling said he was there but he showed up 48 hours later at the Balloon Lift. I was told Mayor Johnson showed up late, after the event was over and one of the children had died.
An ABC Channel 7 Reporter questioned Mayor Johnson's decision to be out of town. Aldermen Anthony Beale and David Moore had similar concerns, stating they too would like to be on vacation but when you make police officers give up their vacation days and are ordered to work overtime…it’s not a good look.
What do you think?
"I saw a neighborhood that was heartbroken, angry, fed up, but I also saw a neighborhood that wanted to come together and come up with a plan to fight this type of violence, this type of senseless violence that took the lives of two mothers and an 8 year old child," stated Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling at a press conference held Monday July 8, 2024.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined Superintendent Snelling in addressing the shocking violence over the July 4th holiday weekend in which 109 people were victims of gunshots, 19 of whom were killed.
"I know our community partners, the philanthropic community, the business community, our faith leaders, are all going to step up and work together to stop this violence. We need more of that." Mayor Johnson said.
Also joining them was Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti, Chief of Patrol Jon Hein, Director of Community Policing Glen Brooks, Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Garien Gatewood, Assistant Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Natashee Scott and the Mayor's Chief of Staff Kristina Zias.
